Direct numerical simulation of turbulent mixing of a passive scalar in pipe flow

چکیده
Turbulent mixing of a passive scalar in fully developed turbulent pipe flow has been investigated by means of a Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS). The scalar is released from a point source located on the centreline of the pipe. The domain size of the concentration field has been chosen large enough to capture the different stages of turbulent mixing. Results are presented for mean concentration profiles, turbulent fluxes, concentration fluctuations, probability density functions and higher-order moments. To validate the numerical simulations the results are compared with experimental data on mixing in grid-turbulence that have been reported in the literature. The agreement between the experimental measurements and the computations is satisfactory. We have also considered the Probability Density Function (PDF). For small diffusion times and positions not on the plume centreline, our results lead to a PDF of an exponential form with a large peak at zero concentration. When the diffusion time increases, the PDF shifts from a exponential to a more Gaussian form. Elsevier, Paris DNS / turbulent mixing / pipe flow

Direct Numerical Simulation of a Sonic Round Jet in a Turbulent Supersonic Cross Flow
A direct numerical simulation of a round under-expanded sonic jet in turbulent supersonic cross flow has been carried out. The objective is to investigate the mixing mechanism which occurs downstream the jet by use of a passive scalar variable. The Navier-Stokes equations in the cylindrical geometry are solved by use of multiblock overlapping meshes. The method has been validated with a laminar...
متن کاملLarge eddy simulation of compressible turbulent pipe flow with heat transfer
A compressible finite volume formulation for large eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent channel flows was extended to solve the turbulent flows in pipes and annular passages. A general finite volume scheme was developed based on conservation equations in Cartesian coordinates with non-Cartesian control volumes. A dual-time stepping approach with time derivative preconditioning was employed and ti...
متن کاملNumerical simulation of scalar mixing from a point source over a wavy wall
The mixing of transported scalars in turbulent flows is a classic topic in turbulence research. The “diffusing power” of turbulent flows was originally recognized, among others, by Taylor (1915) since the beginning of the last century. Later on, Taylor (1921, 1935) also provided the first statistical framework to predict turbulent diffusion in air streams, as well as the scalar mixing in pipe f...

متن کاملDirect numerical simulation of passive scalar transport in transverse jets
Direct numerical simulation is used to study passive scalar transport and mixing in a round turbulent jet, in a laminar crossflow. The ratio of the jet velocity to that of the crossflow is 5.7, the Schmidt number of the scalar is 1.49, and the jet-exit Reynolds number is 5000. The scalar field is used to compute entrainment of the crossflow fluid by the jet. It is shown that the bulk of this en...
